“An exquisitely seamless blend of set, lighting, music and movement.”
Jennifer Dunning, The New York Times, 2001
Verge
In keeping with the Company’s tradition of highly physical dancing that carries the feel of living expression, the project examines this fundamental act from several perspectives: the pedestrian, the sensual, the animal, the seductive. It’s structured around an organic use of spoken text and dance and the creative friction between these elements. The text, developed by Talvin Wilks, has a contemporary feel to it, a voice parallel to the intimacies explored. Playing with ‘dance’ time and ‘real’ time to shape a very intimate look at this basic human activity, the choreography focuses on situations derived from photographs, expanding these images as the performers explore both the narrative and abstract kinetic sense invoked by these vignettes.
Verge, explores the act of touch, both the intimacy of the event and the charged space between bodies, in a way that theatrically plays against the inherent abstraction of dance. ‘An exquisitely seamless blend of set, lighting, music and movement’ (Jennifer Dunning, The New York Times) this quartet examines our intimate response to touch — the electric energy of the moment before, the lingering remains of memory and the revelations that come in its absence. The dancers, trained to be almost matter-of-fact about touch that is intimate in daily life, are challenged to reel back their skills in order to apprehend the moment of contact. Verge delves into this fundamental act from the inside and out — discovering the pedestrian, the sensual, the animal and the seductive.
